Every so often, a new spot opens in DC that instantly becomes my answer to the question, "where should I go to truly reset?" Right now, that answer is the Salamander Spa at the Salamander Washington DC hotel. It is Washington's premier two-level luxury spa, and after a spectacular renovation of the former Mandarin Oriental, it has become my personal pick for a full self-care day in the city. Here is why, and how to plan your own visit.

01

A grand arrival on the Southwest Waterfront

The spa sits at 1330 Maryland Ave SW, inside the Salamander Washington DC hotel on the revitalized Southwest Waterfront. The building was long known as the Mandarin Oriental, and its transformation into a Salamander hotel has been nothing short of spectacular. The waterfront itself is one of my favorite corners of the city to recommend these days, with the Wharf's restaurants and riverfront promenades just steps from the hotel door, so the whole area feels like a destination worth making time for.

02

A spectacular rebirth

The Salamander opened in late 2024, and the renovation shows in every detail. Its two-story design makes it one of the largest spas in DC, and that scale gives you room to breathe. It is the kind of space where the pace of the city falls away the moment you walk in, even before a single treatment begins.

03

Fourteen rooms, advanced skin care

There are 14 beautifully redesigned treatment rooms, so there is room for everything from a classic massage to a full beauty day. The menu also leans into advanced non-invasive skin treatments, which I love recommending to anyone who wants visible results without downtime. The therapists are attentive, the products are considered, and the whole experience feels tailored to you rather than templated.

04

Tea overlooking the Potomac

My favorite part of the visit is the relaxation tea lounge, which overlooks the Potomac River. After a treatment, you sink into a chair, pour a cup of tea, and watch the water. It is a small detail that makes the whole day feel complete, and honestly, it is the view I think about long after I leave.

05

Steam, sauna, and holistic touches

Guests love the steam room and sauna, and I do too. There is something about the thermal circuit, hot then cool then warm again, that resets you from the inside out. The holistic touches throughout, from the calming scents to the considered design details, tie the experience together. It is luxury with a warm, human feel, exactly what the Salamander Collection is known for, and its Middleburg, Virginia property holds a Forbes Five-Star spa rating, so you know the standard is real.

06

Book ahead

One practical note: book your treatment in advance. A spa this good, inside a hotel this popular, fills up quickly, especially on weekends. A little planning up front means the day itself can be completely unhurried, which is the entire point of going.

One line to remember: the best self-care days are the ones you actually schedule. I share these local finds because the best advice is the kind you can actually use. And if you are house-hunting in DC, Maryland, Virginia, or Florida, I would love to be that kind of resource for you too. Reach out anytime and tell me where you are in your search.
