Georgetown is one of the best shopping streets in the country, and it is the rare shopping destination that gets better every time you return. Most of the stores sit on two main streets that cross in the heart of the neighborhood: M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. This is my warm, unhurried guide to a shopping day there, planned the way I would plan it for a friend, with the big-name fashion, the hidden corners, and the little spots most visitors walk right past.

01

Start at the crossroads: M Street and Wisconsin Avenue

The heart of Georgetown shopping is where M Street meets Wisconsin Avenue, and the two streets hold the neighborhood's best-known names. If you love fashion, this is your stretch: you will find outposts of top brands like Reformation, Alice + Olivia, Anthropologie, Athleta, Madewell, M.M.LaFleur, Sézane, SKIMS, and Club Monaco. What I love about shopping here is how walkable it all is. You can wander from one store to the next on foot, duck into a café when your feet need a break, and never once think about your car. Come early on a weekend morning and the streets feel almost yours alone.

02

Book Hill: the independent side of Georgetown

When you are ready for something more personal, walk up Wisconsin Avenue to Book Hill, a quaint cluster of independent boutiques, art galleries, home decor and antique stores that feels a world away from the main crossroads. This is where I send friends looking for one-of-a-kind gifts and home furnishings, the kind of pieces you cannot find twice. My favorite stop is A Mano at 1677 Wisconsin Ave NW, a beloved high-end gift shop filled with home decor, dinnerware, jewelry, and accessories. I have bought more hostess gifts there than I can count, and I have never once walked out empty-handed.

03

For the men: Everard's Clothing

Georgetown is not only a women's shopping destination, and the men in your life should not be left out of the day. Everard's Clothing is a boutique for the sophisticated man, where you will find tailored classics that hold up for years rather than seasons. It is the kind of shop where the staff actually know their stock and can dress you head to toe, from a sharp blazer to the right pair of shoes. If your partner tends to avoid shopping, this is the store that changes their mind.

04

The hidden archway

My favorite Georgetown shopping secret takes a little looking. Off M Street, keep an eye out for a bricked archway that leads to a secret alcove of shops tucked away from the main sidewalk. It feels like discovering a courtyard that was there all along. Inside you will find small, curated storefronts, including Contemporaria, a wonderful source for Italian furniture. Even if you are not shopping for a sofa, step through the archway just to see it. Half the charm of Georgetown is that it still keeps a few surprises for the people who look.

05

Pair it with a spa day

A shopping day in Georgetown pairs beautifully with a spa day, and I would argue the two belong together. Start with a morning treatment at one of the neighborhood's luxury spas, then shop your way down M Street on the way back, or do it in the other order and let the spa reset your feet after a long afternoon of walking. I have written a full guide to my favorite DC spa experiences, including the Spa at the Four Seasons Georgetown, if you want to build the perfect day.

And with house-hunting in DC

Here is the thing I tell every buyer who is looking at homes in Washington: Georgetown shopping is the perfect pairing with house-hunting in DC. When you spend a day walking these streets, you learn the neighborhood in a way no listing can teach you. You feel the pace of the sidewalks, the coffee shops where people actually linger, the walk from a townhouse to the grocery store, and whether this is a place you can picture your everyday life. I always encourage buyers to spend time in a neighborhood before they write an offer, and a shopping day here is one of the most enjoyable ways to do exactly that.

One line to remember: the best way to know a neighborhood is to live a day in it, and Georgetown makes that day a pleasure. I share these guides because the best local knowledge is the kind you can actually use. And if you are looking at homes in DC, Maryland, Virginia, or Florida, I would love to be that kind of resource for you too. Reach out anytime and tell me where you are in your search, and whether your ideal Saturday ends with a shopping bag or a set of keys.
